A Social Media Toolkit for Councils?

A thought occurred to me when driving to work this morning (’cos I’m sad like that) about the kinds of services councils need to manage their social media (in particular Twitter) presence well.

This is particularly pertinent with the demise of Twitapps, which, amongst other things, allows you to keep tracks of @ replies via email. I’ve found this really useful for both my work and personal accounts, and it’s going to be a shame when it goes.

I also use a variety of other services, such as Hootsuite and Social Oomph, as well as using Netvibes to see all my RSS Twitter search feeds in one place.

This is a lot of stuff to manage, a lot of places to have passwords, and means I’m putting a lot of faith in the cloud and it got me thinking, why don’t we put all this stuff in one place?

Therefore, I’ve put together this post to gauge interest in a ‘one stop shop’ for councils to manage their social media presence, as well as getting ideas for the kind of stuff that could be introduced – I’m thinking mainly Twitter for now because of the flexibility of their API, but we could also bring in other stuff like Facebook, and the social media firehose.

Not only would this make things easier for councils who are already using social media, it would also help many others get on board, who may be intimidated or put off by the sheer amount of things they need to sign up for.

Some of the feature ideas I’ve got so far are:

  • @ reply notification
  • New follower management (a sort of semi-auto follow that lists new followers for that day and allows you to pick and choose if you follow back)
  • RSS feed management (because we don’t live in an ideal world)
  • A sort of stripped-down Hootsuite, which allows anyone with a login to tweet or respond to @ replies quickly and easily
  • Multiple account management
  • Workflow

I’ll add to this list as I think of more and as some are submitted. If this gets off the ground, I’ll probably need some developer support too, so if you’re well-versed in PHP and the Twitter API and would like to help out, please let me know!

Agree that something like this could be useful. Would like to see multiple account management and one-to-many publishing across accounts and platforms.

Excellent post – i use hootsuite and this is exactly the type of management tool with workflow that is needed. :-)

Cotweet does much of what you want. Only bit it doesn’t do is follower management but I do this using Tweetlater (or whatever it’s called now) but it does most of the other bits!

At Cambridgeshire we’re just about to start a project to define a ‘framework’ for social media use in the organisation. It will include guidelines and tools for services to use social media for engagement.

I was planning we would put together some form of ‘toolkit’ for services. It should include a suite of monitoring/managing tools e.g. access to a basic Netvibes page they can configure to gather information about what people are saying about their services, e.g. in a particular locality.

I’m also keen to use the new site that Learning Pool are going to be developing for the IDeA (WorkTogether) to share this stuff with other authorities. Are you going to Lincolnlocalgov? Would be interesting to do something on this.

Stuart, are you aware of Carl Haggertys blog? http://carlhaggerty.wordpress.com/ – might find some interesting ideas in there…..

@ Caspar – Yeah, I’ve heard about Cotweet – I’ve yet to check it out though – would be nice if local authorities could have their own platform though, so then it can be tailored as we go along – adding other features for other social networks would be great too.

@ Rollo – Yup, I know Carl quite well, hopefully this will be able to fit in with the work he’s doing with IDeA Knowledge Hub

@ Michelle – Definitely one for the camp I reckon!

Hey Stu – thanks for the link!

I think this is an ace idea! Something that could be reused across local authorities in the UK to help as both a “get started” tool and an ongoing management application would maybe help some authorities to jump on the SocMed wagon.

As it sounds like something Michele has put some thought into it would be excellent to do a round table at the camp!

It’s been a long time since I’ve done any “hardcore” coding but I’m certainly looking for a project to get my teeth into, time allowing!
